The American Society of Civil Engineers declared City Hall as an Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in late 2004. The Bureau of Engineering managed the seismic retrofit of City Hall which included the largest base isolation project in Southern California, which allows the building to be shielded from ground movement caused by an earthquake.
