East Central Interceptor Sewer is Flowing !
The East Central Inteceptor Sewer, Los Angeles' newest major pipeline in the massive wastewater collection system, became operational when sewage was diverted at three separate locations.

1. Schedule
The project completion date is 171 calendar days behind schedule with the completion date projected on August 29, 2004. The City and the Contractor have reached grobal agreement to release sewage in June 29, 2004.
2. Construction costs
Progress payments of $221M (92% of original contract) have been processed. Original contract - $240.35 M
Change orders
Fully executed change orders - $15.0M (6.2% of total bid amount)
Preliminary change orders - $0.5M;
Developing change issues - $1.6M;
Total change orders - $17.1 M (7.1%)
3. Major construction activities underway
Unit 1 - La Cienega Blvd. to ECIS/NORS connection
The ECIS/NORS shaft site is being excavated.
The Unit 1 tunnel boring machine has mined 2,083 meters of the total 2,485 meters or 84%.
The TBM has cleared the Inglewood-Newport seismic zone in the Blair Hills, and has entered the active oil field. A magnetometer, placed at the front of the tunneling machine, is probing for any abandoned oil well casings.
The second ECIS addendum to the Environmental Impact Report which incorporates the changes at the ECIS/NORS connection was approved by the Board of Public Works and will be forwarded to the City Council for approval.
Unit 2 - La Cienega Blvd. to Arlington Ave.
The Unit 2 eastbound tunnel boring machine completed the 4,987 meters tunnel segment on May 9, 2003The tunnel is now being prepared for the installation of the fiber optics telecommunications conduits and the prestressed concrete pipe.
Unit 3 Westbound- Grand Ave. to Arlington Ave.
The 3,654 meter long Unit 3 westbound tunnel was completed on June 18, 2003. The tunnel is being prepared for the installation of fiber optics telecommunications conduits and the prestressed concrete pipe.
(Note): The Unit 3 eastbound tunnel from Grand Avenue to San Pedro Street has been holed through on August 6, 2002.
Unit 4 - Mission/Jesse St. to San Pedro Ave.
The Mission/Jesse westbound tunnel boring machine has driven 3,495 meters of the total length of 5,402 meters or 67% of the tunnel length. It had cleared underneath the MTA Blue Line with no detectable ground settlement in mid-June 2003.
Unit 5- San Pedro Ave. to Trinity St.
The Trinity Street, south of 23rd Street, has been closed to traffic. Alternate alley access has been provided during construction for the residents. Excavation of Trinity Diversion shaft, microtunneling launch pit and retrieval pit for the Unit 5 tunnel are completed. Excavation of the drop structure at San Pedro site is being excavated.
