History
Fire Station 21 is located at 1187 E. 52nd Street. It currently houses an Engine Company and a Rescue Ambulance staffed by
4 Firefighters and 2 Paramedics. Fire Station 21 services the South
Central area of Los Angeles and covers approximately 2.07 square miles.
When built in 1941 the Station serviced an area that was mainly rural.
The area has
changed to become a highly populated district, with some industrial areas
and large amounts of rail and freight activities as well as the Metro Blue
Line & Alameda Corridor that run through the area.
Reason for Project
The existing fire station is only 4,305 square feet and is overcrowded.
The limited amount of square footage does not allow flexibility to deploy
resources efficiently and the Fire Station's main systems are antiquated.
Evaluation Of Current Facility
Areas of deficiencies that were noted by Bureau
of Engineering survey determined problems with: space, seismic, heating
and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing,
building code, American Disabilities Act (ADA), fire protection systems, and
lack of adequate separate gender
facilities.

Projected
Resource Workloads
Community planning census information and Fire
Department historical incident data have been used to project resource
workloads. It is projected that the number of responses will
increase 10% for apparatus assigned to Fire
Station 21 by the year 2010. |
Service
Area Population Growth
Community planning census information indicates that the population growth
for Fire Station 21’s district has increased steadily and is projected
to increase to 288,156 which is a 19.6% increase by the year 2010.
