History
Fire Station 87 is currently located at
10241 Balboa Blvd. It was constructed in 1945 and is approximately
5,360 square feet. The Fire Station houses a Single Engine
and Rescue Ambulance and is staffed by 4 firefighters and 2 paramedics.
The Fire Station was originally designed to house 4 firefighters with two apparatus.
When built, Fire Station 87’s district (5 square miles) was
predominately agricultural. Today
the district is mostly residential and commercial.
This district serves the communities of Northridge, Granada Hills,
and Mission Hills. Within the
district are the Veterans Administration Hospital, Granada Hills Hospital,
and North Hills Shopping Center.
Reason
for Project
The existing fire station is overcrowded
and its main systems are antiquated. The current site is too small to accommodate
a replacement Regional Fire/Paramedic Station.
Evaluation Of Current Facility
Areas of deficiencies that were noted by Bureau
of Engineering survey determined problems with: space, seismic, heating
and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing,
building code, American Disabilities Act (ADA), fire protection systems, and
lack of adequate separate gender
facilities.

Projected
Resource Workloads
Community planning census information and Fire
Department historical incident data have been used to project resource
workloads. It is projected that the number of responses will
increase 6.8% for apparatus assigned to Fire
Station 87 by the year 2010. |
Service
Area Population Growth
Community planning census information
indicates that the population growth for Northridge has increased steadily
and is projected to increase to 61,630, which is a 25.7% increase by the
year 2010.
