DATUM HISTORY

On June 30, 1925 a datum was officially adopted for the City of Los Angeles by Ordinance Number 52,222, which states:

That the datum plane, now in use in the City of Los Angeles be, and the same is hereby abandoned; and that the United States Geological Survey Datum Plane be, and the same is hereby adopted as to the official datum plane for the City of Los Angeles.

The datum used by the U.S. Geological Survey is mean sea level, officially known as the "Sea Level Datum of 1929". Its effect was to add 5.775 feet to elevations based upon the abandoned datum to obtain elevations based on the adopted datum. On April 1, 1978 the City of Los Angeles adopted Ordinance Number 150,763 and changed the name of its datum plane to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Ordinance Number 150,763 states:
