This index constitutes the official record of all precise bench marks and numbers. The City of Los Angeles Survey Division level net consists of over 1,700 miles (2737km) of levels supporting in excess of 17,000 bench marks. For reasons of economy only 85% of the l975 Adjusted bench marks were re-observed for the 1980 Adjustment. No bench mark, once included in the index, regardless of its status (destroyed or abandoned) will be dropped from the index. All agencies and engineers using bench marks and elevations from this index for construction plans for projects by or for the City of Los Angeles are cautioned to select elevations which are consistent with that used in the preliminary survey, regardless of any previous or subsequent elevations. If no precise bench mark has been directly utilized in the preliminary survey, the relationship must be determined by a closed level circuit between two or more precise bench marks.
